5 Very Simple SEO Tips You Can Practice To Improve Ranking
Author: Reginald Chan
When it comes to search engine optimization, many of us are always trying to find the ultimate SEO techniques to boost ranking. While this is fine by all means, they could be missing out very crucial factors in terms of website ranking; Practicing basic SEO recommended by Google.
Basic SEO is the base of any website. In other words, basic SEO could be the only techniques you ever need to get yourself up in the ranks. Here are a list basic SEO you can practice for your website.
1. Keyword research
Keyword research is also known as a process to find keyword phrases which could potentially increase the amount of organic traffic to your website. According to Moz, keyword research is one of the most important, valuable, and high return activities in the search marketing field. Ranking for the "right" keywords can make or break your website.
Two questions which you can use to kick start your keyword research are:
- Finding the topics that would possibly interest your visitors
- The relevancy of the topic towards your website
- How to avoid being penalized by Google?
- How to counter attack Google algorithm update?
- Find the high ranking blog post you have on your site
- Build 2-3 internal links to other related posts
- Build 2-3 internal links from that related posts to other posts
For me, keyword research is all about planning and with the right strategy, you will not only increase your organic traffic but as well as referral one as well.
While there are many premium tools to help with keyword research, I would highly recommend you to use the free Google Keyword Planner.
Now, this brings us to the next discussion.
2. Long tail keywords
With Google Hummingbird and Penguin 2.1 algorithm updates, long tail keywords had become harder and as well as more important toward a website ranking.
For example, ranking for keyword ‘SEO’ could easily lead to over 1,000,000 searches but ranking for long tail keywords such as ‘simple SEO techniques’ could easily reduce your competitions to a mere 20,000. Logically, you would stand a better chance to compete and rank with a competition of 20,000 over a million. The trick here is to ensure that your website is having a healthy balance of both general and long tail keywords.
There are many free and premium tools you can use when it comes to finding the best keywords for your blog. Personally, I rather use Google Keyword Planner as it is being benchmarked by many sites and even Google themselves. 3. Using the proper heading structures
What is heading structures? Well, heading structures would mean using H1 to H4 tags on your blog posts.
By default, you should be using:
H1 – Blog title / Blog post title
H2 – Major headings on the blog post
H3 & H4 – Subheadings
In today’s world, a majority of readers are skimmers; This means that they don’t actually read the whole blog but instead, focus on images and keywords in the post.
With the help of headings, you are providing a platform for your readers to search for the specific information they are looking for and this could be a very effective technique. Crawlers and bots also love heading tags as they provide an outline of what the article is all about.
Building a good headline is also important as that will be the call-to-action for readers whether to stop and read or skip it entirely. This is what I am talking about:
From my case study which I did recently, it seems like more readers stop at the point where they read ‘counter attack’ and the plain ‘avoid’.
Now, does this make any sense to you?
4. Effective internal link building
When I wrote about the On Page and Off Page SEO, it struck my mind that many bloggers are not practicing internal link building techniques. Instead, they are over focusing on external backlinks.
Matt Cutts had said that good linking structure is a pyramid form and thus, you need to spread your backlinks out evenly.
This means that you need to:
With the method above, you are distributing backlink score from one article to another. Basically, the main goal is to ensure that all the SEO ‘juice’ is continuously shared from one article to another without any wastage.
Even though internal link building is always encouraged, ensure that you are not overdoing it as it may look spammy or unreadable for your readers.
Even Google hates that too!
5. Submitting blog sitemap to search engines
Once you have written a blog post, the next step is to get crawlers or search engine bots to crawl it. The faster the article is indexed, the higher chance it will be able to be visible on SERPs in a very short period of time.
Sitemaps are also an important way of communication with the search engines, as it allows you to communicate information about web pages to the crawlers. Sitemap provides a blueprint of your website to crawlers which indirectly, speeding up the process of indexation.
The easiest part is to submit your latest sitemap to search engines; Google and Bing.
